Hiking gear includes things which are used when we go hiking. It mainly includes tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, camp furniture, cookware, headlamps, hiking poles, flashlights, clothing, boots, stoves, insect repellents, and coolers, besides many other things.

Hiking gear provides safety, convenience, and comfort. All the aforementioned hiking gear helps us in having a safe and comfortable trip. Some popular brands include Big Agnes, Black Diamond, Mountain Hardware, Sierra Designs, the North Face, GoLite, Gregory, Mountainsmith, Kelty, Marmot, REI, and much more. However, it is important to choose the right gear. Hiking gear is available in different types, colors, materials, designs, and makes, among other things.

A classic hiking boot is a must for all hikers. It helps protect the feet from getting blisters and sores. Depending upon our excursion, we can either choose a trail-walking boot or a heavy hiking boot. Clothing forms an important part of hiking gear too. Synthetic blend materials are always preferred over other materials, as they keep dry by evaporating perspiration. Brands like PowerDry, Coolmax Apparel, and Airtek make good-quality shirts.

Additional safety is also provided by hiking poles, which make hiking on slippery surfaces easy. Whistles are also important in case you get lost. Durable tents are required by all hikers for protection as well as comfort. Sleeping bags are needed by hikers too. While goose down is more durable, synthetic is cheaper and easier to maintain.

Companies which provide hiking gear supplies include Hiking and Backpacking, Altrec, REI, Patagonia, Campmor, Campready, Great Outdoor Depot, Northern Mountain Supply, Bent Gear, Just Hike, and The Camping Gear. Playing an indispensable role in our lives, hiking gear is a must for all hikers and adventure lovers.

How do you put a five-month hike into a trip report of a few pages? Most of my daily journal entries are about a page each. That is the main reason it has taken me so long to get around to writing this – it seemed like an overwhelming task. So I will mostly hit a few highlights and share some thoughts and feelings.

Why would anyone want to spend five months walking from Mexico to Canada? Most thru-hikers get asked that question over and over. It’s like asking a mountain climber, why do you climb mountains. For me it started when I was active in the singles group of my church in Manhattan Beach, a suburb of Los Angeles. Jason, one of the class members, started leading monthly hikes for the group, usually in the Angeles National Forest in the San Gabriel Mountains, just north of Los Angeles. I was already mountain biking, roller blading, and rock climbing; and enjoyed the mountains and the other group activities, so became a regular on the hikes as well. This was the start of my love of hiking. Jason also organized a few camping trips and backpacking trips, including to the Grand Canyon. I had been brought up camping but had never done any backpacking before. One trip and I was hooked on that too.

On many of the hikes in the Angeles National Forest, we would see signs for, and hike on part of the Pacific Crest Trail. When I found out that it went from Mexico to Canada I thought that would be something fun to do someday. In the years that followed, I joined an adventure racing club and the outdoor activities progressed to longer, harder and more frequent. In the summer of 2002 I went to Peru on a two-week hiking mission trip. That turned into a three-year stint the following year. In 2005, knowing that my term would be up in January of 2006, I started making plans to thru-hike the PCT. The timing all came together, no job, no mortgage or other expenses, and some money in the bank from selling my house when I went to Peru.

I started my hike on April 28 at the Mexican border. I was trying to finish in four months and I had already purchased my return ticket to Peru based on that schedule. The first week went well, and then I started getting blisters. I was also hiker faster than most of the others so I was passing a lot of people but not spending much time with them, and wasn’t making any friendships with other hikers. After two weeks I had to take a few days off to let the blisters heal. I also realized that I needed to slow down and spend time with other hikers if I wanted to make friendships, which was one of my goals for the hike. After leaving Big Bear, CA, I did slow down and started hiking with four other people. Two of them were section hiking and one had to stop due to injury, but I hiked with go-Big, the other one, most of the way to the Oregon border.

The desert areas of Southern California were hard; I told myself then that I never wanted to hike them again. We had to constantly be aware of where our next water source would be, and many times carried three to four liters of water. And yet they had their own beauty, they didn’t last forever, and they provided bonding experiences. They were also broken up with the snowy mountains and beautiful trees. The town stops were frequent and gave us time to relax with other hikers as well.

Just after we started the High Sierra, we met Swiss Miss and Pang. I hiked together with them the rest of the way to Canada. Along the way, I spend varying amounts of time with other hikers as well. A group of 12 of us left Yosemite together – The Dirty Dozen! Half of us were from the U.S. and half were from other countries, so it became a very international experience. Each of us had strengths and weakness, and we learned to work together as a team, and to help and depend on each other. My greatest fear before starting the hike was crossing the rapid flowing, icy cold rivers. They turned out to not be as terrible as I had expected. We had a few close calls and some struggles, but the teamwork was amazing and we did it together.

We entered the Sierra Nevada on June 11, in a very heavy snow year, so we spent about a month hiking through snow, sometimes only getting down below snow level in the evening to camp. I had very little experience hiking in deep snow, and no experience navigating when the trail was covered with snow most of the day. Mostly we did it with map and compass but we did use a GPS some to pinpoint the trail location, and to confirm which was the right pass a few times. I had crampons at the beginning of the Sierras but soon lost them off the back of my pack before I ever used them. One thing we didn’t have to worry about was water. We got spoiled by only having to carry a liter or two of water. We often drank directly from springs and the snow melt streams, without bothering to treat the water.

We carried ice axes but after the first couple of passes, they were used mostly for digging cat holes. The sun cups were one of the biggest problems, along with post holing in the soft snow in the afternoons. Almost everyone used trail running shoes, except the Europeans who wore mountaineering boots. We had wet feet the whole way through the Sierras from the snow and river crossings, and much of Washington from the rain and new snow, but surprisingly it wasn’t much of a problem. We did get tired of the snow and needing to be constantly on the search for the trail. I would like to go back and hike the John Muir Trail (most of which is the same as the PCT) in the fall, when you can actually walk on the trail.

You realize how long California is when you hike the whole way, it took three months and one week to reach Oregon, but I never got tired of the continually changing and always beautiful scenery. From Mt. Shasta on we had numerous forest fires, causing hazy skies, beautiful sunsets, and closed trails and detours. For the last month we weren’t sure we would be able to finish the trail at Manning Park. We did have to skip a section in Oregon due to fires, but the final section before the Canadian border reopened just before we got there. Unlike some just ahead of us, we were able to finish at the official terminating point, and get our pictures at the border monument. That is the thru-hiker’s “summit” moment, similar to when a mountaineer reaches the top of the mountain.

Oregon was only three weeks and Washington took four weeks, and then it was all over, except for the very emotional goodbyes. Unlike the mountaineer, who still has to get down the mountain after the summit, the hike ended on an emotional high, with nowhere to go, no descend time to unwind. We spent a couple of days there, not wanting to say goodbye and go home. It’s hard to describe the feeling of watching the mountain peak landmarks pass below on the flight back to L.A, five months going by in fast reverse in a couple of hours! And then came trying to go back to a “normal” life, when our main concerns for so long were just walking, eating and sleeping. Now we were home, at least our bodies were, but our minds keep wandering back to the trail.

Many people have commented on it as being “The trip of a lifetime”. I understand what they mean but I have a problem with that. There is a common disease that affects many long distance thru-hikers. I have the disease and there is no cure. It is only alleviated to some degree by going on another long hike. When and where I don’t know, but I’m sure it will happen. It’s been 11 months since I finished the hike and I can still spend hours looking through some of the thousands of photos, or watching someone’s slide show, and every time I do, I wish I could grab my backpack and head back to the trail. Just writing this and thinking about it causes me to get emotional and longing for the “simple” life on the trail. Of course like most difficult, but rewarding experiences, it’s easy to forget the hard times and only remember the good.

From the Mexican border to Manning Park, British Columbia, Canada, took 151 days. It was an experience I will never forget. God showed me His faithfulness and provision every step of the way. The friendships made on the hike are very special, the shared experiences of the joys, hardships and dangers of the trail made for deep and lasting bonds. I could not have completed the hike without the help of many of those I spent a lot of time hiking with. Others added a rich dimension to the experience and made it a delight, even through the difficult times. I give thanks to God first, and then to each one that He provided to make the hike such a wonderful experience.

Finding the best hiking socks for your wants are equally as important as finding the right hiking boots. Still if you have the right boot, having the wrong sock can hurt your feet. When purchasing socks, be sure that they fit snugly on your feet with not any bunching or creases. You’ll find a variety of styles and materials to choose from. Be sure that you decide on the best hiking socks which suit your type of hike.

When choosing the best hiking socks, keep these points in mind:

Sock Fabric:

Cotton: Under no circumstances appropriate for any hikes, specifically carrying a backpack. Cotton doesn’t wick (being able to “pull” wetness away from the skin) incredibly effectively and provides no warmth when moist. It also dries incredibly slowly.
Wool: A terrific natural fiber. It has a lot of cushion, warmth capabilities and will even make you warm after becoming damp. Difficulties with wool consist of itchiness next to your skin and the drying time after getting wet may be long. New wool blends are popular simply because they handle many of the unfavorable characteristics of 100% wool socks.
Artificial Fabrics: There are many socks on the market that offer the identical advantages of wool without the hassles. They also offer wicking functionality. Other benefits consist of being gentler compared to wool and drying out time is significantly quicker. They are also more durable than wool.
Silk: A great organic fabric that helps retain warmth. It is lightweight and pleasant, but not as tough as the synthetic fabrics.

Hiking Sock Varieties:

Liners: These are quite lightweight socks and are designed to be worn inside a thicker exterior sock. They provide wicking capabilities and another layer to help prevent blisters by decreasing friction.
Lightweight: Used for warmer, shorter hikes. They offer some warmth yet foster comfort and wicking.
Mid-Weight: Warmer and with more support than the lightweight sock. Commonly used with a liner on colder hikes.
Heavy-Weight: Employed for lengthy multi-day hikes. They’re the thickest, warmest socks on the market and are ordinarily used for colder hikes and tougher terrain. They provide the most cushioning of all the types. Highly recommended if you have a weighty backpack.

Numerous socks made today are created with contemporary artificial fabrics which enable the sock to keep its shape, as well as, provide extra cushioning in places which carry the brunt of the force throughout the hike. With the benefit from of these fabrics, socks are providing more protection for your foot and proving to be more long lasting.

When putting on your socks on your hike, be sure that all creases are gotten rid of before donning your boot. Any parts where bunching occurs can cause hot spots on your feet which can lead to blisters.

Picking the best hiking socks for the hike is really a question of personal choice. Some individuals like to always hike using a liner and a thicker sock on top, while others prefer two thick socks. If you ask ten different people their sock preference, I bet you are going to receive twelve different answers. Experiment with your sock selection and find the one or a variety of that satisfy your needs and are comfortable.

Also remember that whenever choosing new hiking boots, use the socks which you will be hiking with to try them on. You need to duplicate the exact factors on the trail.

Hiking with the right socks can be the basis of a great excursion.

This can make the hike much more interesting. The club usually has a leader of the hike who will point out interesting things along the way. If you are not familiar with the trails, it is always good to go with a group and a leader who is an experienced hiker.

ALL FAMILY MEMBERS CAN JOIN IN ON THE HIKE

Even your little children will love to go along on a hike, providing the walk is not too far for them. You can always start out on short hike – some clubs will have a one-mile hike, five-mile hike, ten-mile hike and even more. There are also different type of hikes – such as day hikes and moonlight hikes. As with anything else, you should ask your physician before starting any kind of exercise program.

EXPENSES

Hiking is very inexpensive. You might have to pay a hiking club a fee to be a member. On most hikes, people will take some snacks and something to drink during rest periods. You might want to carry a small “fanny pack” with you in order to be able to carry all your snacks, etc. The only other cost involved would probably be the gas to get you to the hiking starting point. If someone is interested in being a “professional hiker”, there are much more sophisticated supplies, etc. you would need. Right now, we are just talking about hiking for fun.

WHY IS HIKING FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY?

First of all, it gives everyone a chance to be together. You have something in common to talking about. When you take your rest breaks, you can all get a chance to discuss the hike or any subject you want to bring up. You might even want to play a couple of word games while relaxing during the break.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Walking is often the recommended exercise choice by physicians. If you had a stressful week at work, what better way to relax then to take a hike with your family and enjoy the beautiful outdoors!

I have also done quite a bit of hiking and belonged to a hiking club.

Have you thought about a Colorado vacation this year? During the summer, Colorado blooms with wonderful sites and outdoor adventures. And it’s hiking that tops the summer activities on a Colorado vacation. While most people think of winter and skiing when they think of vacationing in Colorado you should know that Colorado is known as a summer destination too.

There are so many things to do and places to see in this centrally located state. Colorado is such a varied destination. You can enjoy the rolling plains on the eastern side of the state, mountains and valleys in central Colorado, and mesas and buttes in the west. In every area, there are hiking trails to get you into the remote places that most people miss from there cars.

Hiking is a family favorite when vacationing in Colorado. There are many easy hikes that don’t demand more than a couple of hours to complete. Other hikes can take the whole day, while there are even long-distant, camping hikes you can partake in. It doesn’t matter if you’re a couch potato, from the city, or an athlete, when you come to Colorado you will want to get out of your car and enjoy the abundance of views that Colorado has to offer.

While hiking in Colorado, you will be able to enjoy seeing a myriad of wildlife and wildflowers. This is what Colorado is noted for in the summer months. There are numerous public lands that make a nature hike possible to your family.

Little Causeway lake in the idyllic Flat Tops Wilderness Area is a nice three mile round-trip hike in the Northwest portion of Colorado. Little Causeway Lake sits just below the buttressed walls of the Devils Causeway. This is an extraordinary fin of volcanic rock that connects two high alpine mesas.

The short hiking trail passes though wildflower-filled clearings and arrives at the tranquil Causeway Lake. This area is home to beavers, ducks woodpeckers, and elk. You will love watching the wildlife and viewing the colorful wildflowers in the area.

For a longer day hike you might want to visit the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The only path you will follow through the Great Sand Dunes are the footprints of the hikers that just preceded you. You might not even find their footprints if the wind has come up and erased them.

This wilderness of sand covers 33,000 acres and rewards hikers with a sublime and majestic isolation among the towering sand dunes that are constantly changing with each breeze. After reaching and descending the first dune, you will imagine that you are in the Middle East.

It is a two mile hike through the dunes, but on arrival back to the visitor center you will be greeted by the refreshing river that flows at the base of the dunes. Children love playing in the river as it is like spending a day at the beach. The sand backs up water and makes the river pulsate with waves.

When you’re looking for a hiking expedition while on your Colorado vacation, you might want to do a long-distance jaunt. Long distance hikes are intended for the gonzo backpackers. A long-distance trail in Colorado is very strenuous but, because you will be camping along the way, they can be experienced in segments. An example of a hiking expedition is:

The Gore Range Trail, which is outside of Vail, runs 55 miles down the entire length of the Gore Range. Those vacationers that have skied Vail, Copper Mountain, or Keystone in the winter have experienced moments of inspiration created by the spectacular views of the rugged granite peaks of the Gore Range. In the summer, these peaks of the Gore Range provide the best, easy-access backpacking in Colorado.

The Gore Range Trail ascends over one magnificent mountain pass after another. With each mountain crest, the trail descends into lush valleys ablaze with wildflowers. If you want to backpack hike this trail, plan your Colorado vacation for at least two weeks. You can shorten the hike though by hiking to Wheeler Lakes from a trailhead at Copper Mountain.

You will be hiking from 8,700 feet to 12,000 feet along the Gore Range Trail. Remember that this is a leave-no-trace area and you should stay on the trail at all times. Take only photographs and leave no footprints.

Here’s a Colorado wildlife fact that may help you plan your Colorado vacation and where to hike:

If you want to see bald eagles during your Colorado vacation, you can see them while hiking around Barr Lake in Metro Denver.

Enjoy your Colorado vacation by hiking and viewing the scenery that most people miss from their car. You will love the different parts of the state that you will see while hiking in the tranquil countryside and mountains. You will never regret your Colorado vacation as you will see some of the most beautiful and spectacular scenery in North America.

Jim Bruce writes about spots to vacation in when travelling to Colorado. You can see more about where to take your Colorado vacation by going to his website at: http://www.coloradotravelexperience.com

Hiking trips are an adventurous way to take a vacation or a little bit of time out to enjoy nature at its finest, up close. By taking a hiking trip you are also able to go to destinations that are remote or hard to get to, making your hiking trip an adventure that won’t easily be forgotten. Research the place that you are planning to visit on your hiking trip. Find out the best time of the year is to visit, as sometimes the weather conditions can be quite extreme at certain times of the year.

Although hiking on your own can seem like an exiting adventure, it is a lot safer to go hiking in a group. The more people who are along for the hike, the more likely it is you will all return home safely. If there is an accident or mishap along the way, there will be more people to assist. Before going on a hike, it is also a good idea to take part in a basic first aid course.

Since you are hiking, it will be necessary to carry everything needed for your adventure on your back. This will mean that the things that you take will be limited. Some of the things that you can’t do without are good quality hiking gear such as boots and waterproof, lightweight clothing to provide warmth and protection from the elements. Rope, tarp and sleeping bags will be necessary especially if you are camping out. These things will provide you with some of the necessities while hiking.

Make sure to bring along a first aid kit complete with sterile bandages, gauze and disinfectant. Other necessities such as water and food for the trip are essential. Matches will be needed to light a fire if you are planning on camping out on your hiking trip or if you get lost. Dehydrated food can be an ideal way to carry a fair amount of food without it taking up a lot of space or being too heavy to carry.

Hiking trips are not only a lot of fun they are also very beneficial to your health. Hiking will not only make you more fit, it will also help reduce stress and allow you plenty of thinking time. The feeling of challenging yourself will also be great for your mental health.

It is important to remember that, when hiking, you should bring all the necessary things needed. Think over what you need very carefully before taking your hiking trip. Notify family, neighbors or people of importance that you are going and when you are expected back from your hiking trip. If you are new to hiking, it may be a good idea to take some hiking safety classes before going out alone.

Don’t forget to take a camera so that, once you return home, you can share your adventures with friends and family. You will also have a long-term memento of how beautiful the countryside was on your hiking trip.

The best hiking boots or hiking shoes really depends on you and what you want out of them. Knowing the differences and what to look for will make it much easier to decide whether you need hiking boots, hiking shoes or hiking sandals.

And hiking boots are really one of the most important pieces you can have in your backpacking gear or hiking equipment. So lets go over the basics to help you decide what your needs really are.

Hiking Shoes — These are generally lightweight hiking boots with good foot and some ankle support. They’d be great on a well groomed trail and will usually require little or no breaking in. Hiking shoes are usually pretty flexible and are cut just below the ankle bone which is why they’d be fine to use on well maintained or groomed trails.

They are generally constructed using a combination of leather and lightweight fabrics and I would check to make sure that they are waterproof or at least water resistant. The other thing I would check on is what their main intention for use is. A lot of people nowadays are wearing hiking shoes around town on a daily basis as more a fashion piece rather than a functional hiking shoe. If the shoes or boots you are looking at are designed more as a fashion shoe then keep looking because they won’t offer you the support or comfort that your feet will need.

Hiking Boots — The best hiking boots will offer you comfort, durability, water resistance, foot and ankle support and flexibility.

For most hikers and backpackers there are generally two types to choose from, the mid-weight kind and the heavier weight kind.

The mid weight hiking boots are probably the most popular choice of the two types and can be worn for most off trail hiking as well as the more maintained trails. They are a little heavier than the shoes but they offer increased support for the foot and ankle as they cover the ankle bone. The increased support does mean a little less flexibility and will require some breaking in.

My tip to help prevent any heel blisters from newer hiking boots is to tape a round cosmetic spongy pad (found at any dollar store by the bagful) under your good quality hiking socks. I’ve never had a blister since hiking this way.

The heavier hiking boots are used more for much rougher off trail terrain, are much heavier in weight and are much more technical in design. This is to offer maximum support for the entire foot and ankle including more shock absorbency, water resistance and more. Because of their increased support they are much stiffer and require more breaking in time than the mid weight style.

Once you understand the basic differences of each type of hiking boots and hiking shoes you will be able to make a better decision based on what your needs are and what will suit you best.

If you’ve never tried hiking, then you will probably not have any picture it as walking by steep mountain slopes in dusty trails or simply lived filled with nothing but sore feet and blisters, insect bites. The latter sounds quite nasty doesn’t it?

The truth is of course hiking can involve both of these things, but, with the correct orientation, techniques and equipment there is no reason at all why you shouldn’t avoid unpleasant aspect of hiking and enjoy its many positive aspects, as magnificent scenery, fresh air, healthy exercise and refreshing soul solitude or cheerful companionship, what you choose.

Perhaps a good starting point is to understand which hiking is not just.

Even if you can walk to some mountains, Hiking mountain climbing not involving the use of special techniques and equipment and that is potentially dangerous, if not lethal.

For hikers about the real danger only found getting lost in the desert or accidentally suffers things like a snake bite. However, both destinations can be easily avoided with a little guidance and some common sense.

Hiking also may form only one part of an activity involving other hobbies such as caving, canoeing and fishing, although most of them is much more vigorous than that walks and require expert guidance or training.

For hiking all you need to start are a good pair of boots, some appropriate outer clothing and access to an area that allows you to enjoy the experience.

Good hiking boots can be purchased from a range of vendors, many with an online presence, and outdoor clothes in every price range and style is also readily available. Choosing the right trousers, shirt, jacket and socks is quite easy as long as you have in mind the area where you will be hiking and the time.

There are also a number of other equipment that can help make your experience more enjoyable and such things as backpacks, maps, compasses, Hiking poles, portable GPS navigation systems, first aid kits and bug spray can be picked up as you go along.

You will also want to consider some common sense security guidelines, before starting the walk very far from their places breadcrumb-coated hills. Although the dangers of hiking are relatively minor, it is possible to get lost in even a patch too small Woods and snakes and other wild animals can transform a walk into something that you only see on reality TV.

However, after some basic instruction and having done some preparations, you can quickly be ready to deal with some hiking very adventurous. In fact, with a little more specialized orientation and some experience, will soon be able to take walks at night or more and in a matter of weeks, you will be able to tackle even the toughest trails.

Unite hiking club place will put the Club’s resources at their disposal and allow you to obtain advice and information about all aspects of hiking, including things like or Timberland hiking boots there are a good buy. It will also allow you to make new friends and roommates for the more adventurous hiking.
